Al-Hakim Mosque is one of the most impressive and important mosques in Cairo. Situated in the Gamalia district, it was built during the Fatimid era between 990 and 1013 AD. It stands out among the various religious buildings in Cairo for its unique architecture and design.
This building is one of the first examples of Fatimid architecture, featuring an exquisite portal with a wooden double dome and intricate carvings. The mosque is famous for its minaret, which stands on an octagonal base and features intricate decoration and colored tiles. Inside, there are two main courts surrounded by a central nave and four side aisles.
There are also several other smaller chambers and vestibules that lead from the courtyard to different parts of the mosque. The central nave has three rows of columns decorated with colorful mosaics, while each aisle contains four columns with carved capitals.
The interior walls feature marble cladding as well as traditional Islamic calligraphy written in Kufic script. In addition to its unique architectural elements, Al-Hakim Mosque also contains several ancient tombs, including those of two prominent Caliphs from the 11th century: al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah who commissioned its construction and his son Ali Aziz Billah.
Today, this iconic monument still stands as a reminder of Fatamid history and continues to be a major attraction for visitors to Cairo, attracting locals and tourists alike to experience its beauty firsthand.
