The Qalawun Complex in Cairo is one of the most fascinating and important monuments in the world. It was built by Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun, a Mamluk sultan, who ruled from 1290 to 1293 CE. The complex consists of three main buildings: a madrasa (Islamic school), a mausoleum for Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun and his family, and a mosque.
The mausoleum is remarkable for its beautiful façade, which features an intricate mashrabiya, or carved wood latticework window screens. This is an example of traditional Islamic art as well as architectural innovation.
The mosque, located on the right side of the complex, is crowned with a minaret that stands 42 meters tall. In addition to these impressive structures, there is also a hospital attached to the complex, known as Maristan al-Mansuriya. This was the first institution dedicated to health care in Egypt and it treated both physical and mental illnesses.
Qalawun Complex Cairo is recognized as an integral part of Egyptian history and culture because of its monumental size and sophisticated level of detail that went into its design. For instance, it has several unique features such as marble stones inscribed with Arabic calligraphy from the Qur'an that adorn both the interior and exterior walls of the madrasa building. Additionally, its walls are decorated with intricate paintings depicting scenes from Islamic history as well as floral designs made out of gold leaf called muqarnas. In terms of architecture, this site showcases various styles such as Mamluk Revivalism which combines Islamic traditions with European Renaissance elements and Ayyubid architecture which uses curves instead of straight lines throughout its structures.
The Qalawun Complex in Cairo still stands today – more than 700 years after it was built – testament to the skill of its builders and testament to its historical importance.
