Cairo Tower is a free-standing concrete tower located in Zamalek, the major island of the Nile River in Cairo, Egypt. It stands at 187 meters tall and has an observation deck that offers panoramic views of the city from its spectacular height.
Designed by prominent Egyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, it was built to commemorate the efforts of President Gamal Abdel Nasser in promoting Egyptian culture and arts. It was opened to the public as part of Cairo’s 1952 centennial celebrations, making it one of the oldest modern towers in Africa.
The tower is made up of two main components – an exposed concrete shaft rising above a two story reinforced concrete base. The circular base tapers upward, connecting with the slender pillar at a height of 96 meters and then continuing to its full height.
The base also houses three elevators that take visitors up to the observation deck located at 172 meters on top of the tower. From here, guests can admire striking vistas from every angle as far as 40 kilometers away.
The exterior lighting provides a dramatic effect for viewers on the ground after dark, illuminating different colors that often reflect festivities or holidays taking place in Cairo. Additionally, there are several restaurants inside where visitors can relax and enjoy a meal while admiring sceneries over Cairo’s skyline without leaving their seats. This makes it one of Cairo's most popular tourist attractions and landmarks which draws hundreds of people each day.
