The Mosque of Muhammad Ali, commonly known as the Alabaster Mosque, is a historic mosque located in Cairo, Egypt. The mosque was built between 1828 and 1848 under the orders of Muhammad Ali Pasha, the ruler of Egypt at the time.
It was initially constructed as a place of worship for both Sunni Muslims and Greek Orthodox Christians. The mosque is considered one of the most impressive monuments in Cairo due to its size and elaborate architecture. Its minaret stands over 70 metres high and dominates the skyline of Central Cairo.
The mosque is made up of an inner square courtyard surrounded by four arcades that support a large dome supported by four colossal columns each measuring 18 meters high. These columns are made from red granite and white marble giving it the nickname “Alabaster Mosque”. The walls are decorated with intricate geometric designs featuring muqarnas – traditional Islamic stone carvings – and calligraphy featuring verses from the Qur’an.
Inside, there are two tombs dedicated to Muhammad Ali Pasha’s sons Tusun Pasha (1815-1853) and Ibrahim Pasha (1789-1848). Additionally, there are several smaller shrines dedicated to other members of his family including his mother Khushiyar Hanim (1771–1826), his daughter Zibet El-Masriyya (1820–1905) and his wife Nafisa Khushiyar Hanim (1790–1838). There is also a special area dedicated to Nafisa which contains her personal possessions including jewellery and furniture.
The mosque has undergone extensive renovations over the years but retains much of its original grandeur despite being more than 150 years old. Today it serves as an important religious site not only for Sunni Muslims but also for Shia Muslims who travel from all around Egypt to visit this historical landmark for prayer activities or simply for sightseeing purposes.
