Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt is a large city square and public space located in the heart of downtown, sitting at the intersection of two major thoroughfares. It has long been one of Cairo’s most beloved public spaces, and a place for celebration throughout its long history.
During the 2011 Egyptian Revolution it was the epicenter of political protests, bringing together protesters from all over the country to demand change.
It was also the scene of much violence during this time as police and military forces clashed with demonstrators in an attempt to suppress their democratic efforts. Since then, Tahrir Square has become a symbol of democracy and hope for Egyptians and others around the world.
Named after former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser's popular slogan "Tahrir al-Watan" (Translated: Liberation of the nation), Tahrir Square was formally opened in May 2011 after being closed since March due to protests that had taken place there. The exact size of Tahrir Square is debated; however, it is estimated to be about 40 acres or 1.6 million square meters in size-making it one of largest squares in Africa.
The square includes several statues dedicated to Nasser and also features a large fountain which can be lit up at night with different colored lights.
Standing tall at one end of Tahrir Square is a large obelisk known as Qasr Al-Nil Bridge Monument which serves as an iconic symbol for Cairo itself. It stands 70ft tall and marks where Ramses II once crossed into Old Cairo from Giza during his conquest 4500 years ago. The monument was built by Khedive Ismail Pasha in 1874 to commemorate this event and its construction predates that of many other monuments within Egypt such as the Pyramids or Sphinx at Giza.
Tahrir Square is home to not just historical sites but also various shopping venues such as cafes and restaurants, banks, hotels, shops selling souvenirs and other services catering to tourists visiting Egypt’s capital city Cairo each year.
There are also several bus routes that regularly pass through Tahrir Square making it easy to reach any other part of town from its center point location - this allows travelers who come here even more freedom while they explore its vibrant atmosphere full of culture, life & history!
