The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan is an impressive and majestic Islamic religious complex located in Cairo, Egypt. It was built between 1356 and 1363 by the Mamluk sultan, Al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun, who is known as Sultan Hassan.
The complex consists of a madrasa (Islamic school), a mosque and several other facilities including mausoleums for Sultan Hassan and his family members.
The mosque itself is an example of Mamluk architecture which incorporates elements from all over the Islamic world, including Persian, Syrian and Moroccan influences. One of the most remarkable features is its large adobe dome which stands at over 32 meters tall and looms impressively above the surrounding area. Other remarkable features include its three minarets and a granite fountain basin which was carved out of one single piece of stone.
The interior of the mosque is just as impressive as its exterior with marble columns and intricate decorations covering almost every surface. The walls are also covered with exquisite calligraphy featuring verses from the Quran. There are also multiple mihrabs (prayer niches) located throughout the mosque to indicate the direction for prayer for worshippers towards Mecca.
In addition to being used as a place of worship, Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan also served as an important educational institution in Cairo during medieval times. Its madrasa provided education in various fields such as Islamic law, Arabic grammar and literature, mathematics and astronomy. The madrasa also included lecture halls to accommodate up to 800 students at any one time along with other amenities such as dormitories, kitchens and bathrooms for them to use during their stay at the complex.
Today, Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan remains an important religious site in Cairo that attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to marvel at its grandeur while reflecting on its rich history spanning back centuries ago.
